Recently, the international standard organization 3GPP has frozen the 5G R16 standard, while R16 has focused on the definition of high reliability and low latency 5G scenarios, which means that the 5G standard is further improved.

3GPP, the third generation mobile communication partner program, is an international organization for the development of 3G/4G/5G. The 3GPP led 5G standard mainly includes three versions of the protocol, namely, R15, R16 and R17. After the three major agreements are completely frozen, the core framework of the three major application scenarios standard is complete, and the subsequent R18 agreements will continue to be optimized.

As we all know, there are three main application scenarios for 5G, namely, enhanced mobile broadband eMBB, high reliable low latency communication URLLC, and large scale connection communication mMTC. Previously, R15 has been frozen in June 2019, mainly for eMBB scenarios, that is, the optimization of network speed enhancement. R16 and R17 standards will support low latency and wide connect application scenarios, which is the 5G's larger home, and is closely related to vertical industries and industrial applications.

"In the 5G standard, R16 is a very important version that can really make 5G move from 2C to 2B," Cui Kai, senior research manager of IDC China, told the twenty-first Century economic news reporter. "The standard freeze has a great effect on the business landing and the maturity of the upstream industry chain. The standard is uncertain, and the upstream chips, modules and software development can not be pushed forward. Bumpy R16: good B terminal industry

In the eyes of many people in the industry, the freezing of R16 standards has gone through many frustrations, and the process has been delayed two times. Cui Kai said: "5G is the first unified standard since 2/3/4G. Because in the group communication, the US ban resulted in many American companies unable to communicate with HUAWEI offline and one to one. HUAWEI also held many positions in the whole working group, so it had an impact on the whole process. Coupled with the outbreak, R16 became the first version of online to release and freeze.

The industry has been looking forward to R16 for a long time, because after the freezing of R15 and the issuance of domestic 5G licenses, the application power of 5G is mainly concentrated on the consumer side. We are eager for better standards to drive the development of B end industry applications. In the near future, the hot autopilot network car, if large-scale operation is needed, needs more support from 5G, edge computing and so on, and these are inseparable from a clearer basic standard.

Cui Kai told reporters that R16 mainly brought about three aspects of optimization. First, R16 mainly supports the 5G scenario with low latency and reliability. It will have a new definition for the existing 5G system. Before that, all vendors have provided some pre commercial and beta R16 functions on the existing 5G version. After the R16 is frozen, the software and the version are iterated.

Secondly, based on the characteristics of R16, the most important application scenario is still in manufacturing, such as solving the problem of industrial Internet. These industrial scenes are also the most urgent demand for 5G. The other is in the transportation industry. R16 has made a new definition of the functional characteristics of the Internet of vehicles, and defined the third stages of the Internet of vehicles. In particular, it has made new plans for the communication between vehicles and vehicles, vehicles and infrastructure. Automatic driving and remote operation are all newly defined. Third, the utilization of NR's unauthorized spectrum has been optimized, including the improvement of 5G's energy efficiency.

Gan Bin, vice president of HUAWEI wireless product line, recently said that one of the characteristics of 5G is that it will bring large bandwidth and low latency. At present, manufacturing industry, industrial Internet and vehicle interconnection are recognized by the industry. In addition, some subdivision industries of ARVR and AI will also benefit from the landing of the new 5G standard.

Commercial re acceleration in 2021

In Cui Kai's view, the most important thing for R17 is to focus on the wide coverage of the scene. The important thing for Chinese manufacturers is the attribution of NB-IoT (narrow band Internet of things) technology, "because NB-IoT is derived from the 4G-LTE network, which is similar to the way of wide coverage and large connections. How to evolve and merge with 5G is also a hot topic. At present, from the perspective of R17 planning, NB-IoT will be transferred to 5G, so it is relatively advantageous to Chinese operators or investors. "

According to the planning of 3GPP, the R17 standard is scheduled to freeze at the end of 2021, and R17 is also divided into three stages. Now the first stage has been completed, the scope and direction of R17 discussions have been clarified, and the second phase will be completed by the end of 2020. Cui Kai said: "R17 is planning a lot of content, making more improvements to R15 and R16, including making some new optimization in higher spectrum, such as millimeter wave; further optimizing the Internet of vehicles and industrial Internet based on R16; optimizing communication between space and satellites in the future; and in edge computing, network slicing, Internet of things and 5G unauthorized spectrum, there are still a lot of problems. It is not hard to see that after the large-scale construction of 5G infrastructure this year, 2021 will become a critical period for B terminal application development. Next year, 5G business will speed up again. An operator told the twenty-first Century Business Herald reporter: "this year's 5G base station construction task is almost completed, then we will enter the stage of optimizing the network. The new 5G standard will play a role in the industry scene, but there are not many applications to take.

According to IDC's prediction, the total number of 5G base stations in China is about 750 thousand -80 this year, which basically can meet the coverage of main urban areas. "B terminal industry application will be popularized through the way of point to area and project system. Now the application scenario is relatively small. With the industry advancing, the application of 5G will be enriched in the second half of this year to the first half of next year. At the same time, in the second half of this year, the SA core network will be commercially available. With the freezing of standards, 5G applications will gradually mature. Cui Kai said.

Guo Ping, HUAWEI's rotating chairman, said in a recent GSMA Forum: "HUAWEI's next step is to focus on industry applications with partners. Today, 5G is developing rapidly, with 81 commercial networks covering 72% of the world's GDP economies, and has developed 90 million 5G users. Driven by 5G, the process of digitalization of thousands of lines has accelerated greatly.

"We predict that two years later, more than 3 hospitals in the country will use 5G to achieve intelligent medical treatment, 500 thousand schools will conduct 5G distance education, and 300 thousand smart parks and hundreds of thousands of hotels and shopping malls will be scale commercial in two years," Gan Bin said. "More applications are now being verified by technology, and the relevant verification workers are expected to be completed this year. It will start mass replication and commercialization next year, including 5G power, 5G mining, 5G manufacturing, 5G steel, 5G port, 5G oil and gas industry, and all walks of life will launch more 5G applications.

In addition to HUAWEI, Ericsson also sends similar messages, and applications need to wait, but it will lead to change. Ericsson CEO Bao Yikang said that when the 5G infrastructure was built, the killer app would emerge. "Before the 5G infrastructure is built, it is difficult to define any killer applications. However, we are very clear that once the 5G infrastructure is completed, killer applications will emerge and will create several times the value of the infrastructure itself.
