In February 22, 2011, Christchurch suffered an earthquake of magnitude 6.3, killing 185 people. Most of the buildings in the central business district were severely damaged, and downtown business district was closed to the public.
In order to restore the normal life after the earthquake as soon as possible and stimulate the local retail industry which was depressed due to the earthquake, the local government built the temporary container converted from the earthquake.
