The trade agreement will double the export of Peru's clothing to Mexico, Peru's national industrial society textile Commission said.

Henry frek, chairman of the textile Commission, said that the free trade agreement would benefit Peru's entire textile value chain, from agriculture to chemical industry to fabric and clothing.

In 2010, Peru exported $18 million worth of textiles and clothing to Mexico. Last year's export revenue reached US $26 million, an increase of 44% over the same period last year.

The FTA between Peru and Mexico is expected to double.

This year's exports to Mexico, because of Peru's textile and clothing exporters, Mexico is an important market, including cotton, wool, man-made fiber and knitwear items.

Prior to the free trade agreement, Peru's textile projects suffered an average tariff of 15% on exports to Mexico, and clothing tariffs amounted to 30%.

At present, Peru's textiles and clothing items can be exported to Mexico duty-free, but the 66 category is considered to be a sensitive item. The tariff of these 66 categories of products will be phased out within 5 years, Mr Fu said.

Mr. Foulke said the free trade agreement between the two countries has its origin.

This clause prohibits the use of yarns imported from India and other countries in the production of fabrics so that they are eligible for duty free exportation to Mexico.

Only those products made of yarn made in Peru are eligible to be included in the free trade agreement between the two countries, because Peru imported a lot of yarn from India.

Manufacturers can use a specific type of elastic and other yarns from the United States and Brazil for clothing production before they can get a tax exemption mechanism.
