The Olympic Clothing Made In China Is Purely Economic.
Publicly protest against the "made in China" US Olympic delegation Jersey Is it necessary?
In the process of preparing for the London Olympic Games, Ralph Lauren, the American fashion designer, was criticized by the public because his team uniform was made in China. The US Olympic uniform has been processing abroad since 1998. Why is it that this time the public is so angry?
There are two reasons for this. First, from 1998 to 2008, a Canada Company called Roots processed the uniforms for the US Olympic delegation. Compared to the outsourcing of uniforms to China, which is cheap in manpower and competitive in the US economy, it is clear that outsourcing to Canada will not cause much public outrage. Second, this year is the year of American election. The problem of unemployment caused by outsourcing is the first problem in every American brain.
Senate majority leader and Democrat Harry Reid said the US Olympic Committee should feel ashamed and guilty because outsourced outfit made the textile industry lose many jobs. Speaking to the US Olympic Committee, John Bona, speaker of the house of Representatives, said, "do you think they can distinguish between interests?"
In fact, the politicians of the two parties should know more about the funding for the Olympic games than others. "Unlike other Olympic delegations in the world, the US Olympic delegation is privately sponsored. We are very grateful to our sponsors, "said Patrick Sandusky, a spokesman for the US Olympic Committee.
On Twitter, Thaddaus Ki called some people's anger about the "made in China" uniforms as "nonsense". Thaddaus Ki is right to say so. The Olympic uniforms should be "heaped up" with the fierce speech of politicians, including Reed's assessment of the matter. However, this approach will not help the US economy, nor will it be conducive to the development and promotion of friendly relations with China.
China's official news agency Xinhua commented that "this is a narrow nationalistic mentality, a blasphemy towards the Olympic spirit, and an embodiment of ignorance." The Xinhua News Agency commented that China and the United States are important trade partners to each other. Last year the trade volume between the two countries exceeded 440 billion dollars. "If there is a reasonable basis for the accusation of the uniforms made in China, why does the US Congress not forcibly prohibit the members who represent the country in politics from wearing foreign made garments or using foreign made products?" the article points out, "indeed, if anything should be burned, it can only be hypocrisy of American politics."
Here, an example worth mentioning is the American sports apparel and sports equipment giant Nike. In June of this year, Nike showed its Chinese uniforms to the Chinese Olympic delegation. Nike will provide a full set of uniforms for the Chinese basketball team and the other six teams to London. Chinese officials have not shown any dissatisfaction. This is just a simple fact: the Olympic teams will receive sponsorship from famous overseas brands.

It is untenable that politicians condemn Ralph Lauren's actions as an unpatriotic act. The outsourcing of Olympic uniform is purely economic. According to a report issued by the Bureau of Labor Statistics in 2011, although the wage level of Chinese garment workers is higher than before, in 2008, Chinese workers paid only $1.36 an hour, much lower than the US workers' level of $32.26 an hour.
Now, Ralph Lauren has promised that the US team's uniforms will be processed locally at the 2014 Winter Olympics. In order to offset the high human cost of processing local uniforms, it was suggested that a "patriotic Olympic clothing tax" should be imposed. However, since the Republican Party has always opposed taxes, the new tax is unlikely to pass.
At present, a relevant law has been submitted to the Senate to ensure that all Olympic uniforms will be produced in the United States.
Another strong evidence that "outsourced outsourcing is only an economic issue rather than patriotic" is that after the 9.11 terrorist attacks, the demand for American flags soared and most American flags were no longer processed in the United States. According to the Christian Science Monitor, the flag buyers tend not to be patriotic enough to pay higher prices for the national flag processed locally.
It can also explain the patriotic problem from another angle, that is, athletes do not seem to care much about the production of their uniforms. Nick Simonds, the American athlete who is about to compete in the 800 meter race, wrote in Twitter: "the Olympic opening ceremony designed by Ralph Lauren is made in China, so thank China."
American society's understanding of the word "made in China" is also changing. It is becoming more and more close to representing products authorized by American companies but produced in China. Moreover, in other Western societies, this concept is also increasingly recognized.
The disagreement about whether the US Olympic uniform should be processed in China is merely a new manifestation of the long-standing "attack China" tendency in the US, which only damages Sino US relations, and these accusations are often without any basis.
